When you were born I wanted to lick you.
You had curly hair and a spot of our blood on the top of your head.
I nuzzled you towards my chest and willed you to melt back into me as you latched on.
Having never not known me, I am your soil and roots.
You will separate and grow on your own someday,
But for now I am your whole ecosystem.
And you are my reason for existing.
Birth reminds us that we are mammals.
We can chase comfort for the rest of our lives,
But we arrive from each other with tenacity and instincts.
I wanted to lick you like all of the mamma cows do to their newborn calves.
Like a lioness does to her cubs.
Ferociously, because that is how I will always love you.
Not with timid tenderness or with conditions but with all that I am.
The only other thing we need now, is the hands and voice of your Dad.
Welcome to the world, my second born.
You are safe and loved.
